The use of Thieves oil can be traced back to 1413.
When the terrible Bubonic Plague (also known as the Black Death) ravaged Europe and Asia.
The disease swept over the city, infecting both civilians and doctors.
It appeared impossible to avoid acquiring it if you were in the proximity, and at the time, the illness meant death.
Four thieves, on the other hand, who were known for robbing diseased dead bodies of all their belongings but miraculously avoided contracting the highly dangerous plague, were apprehended and prosecuted for stealing from the sick and dying.
The offense committed by these four individuals was punished by death by fire.
The judge was so intrigued by how these men had managed to avoid contracting this awful disease that he offered them a deal if they would reveal their secret.
Taking the bargain, they offered stories about their herbal knowledge and how specific combinations of herbs can have tremendous medical capabilities.
The Thieves revealed their secret to the judge: they were perfume and spice merchants who had lost their jobs due to the plague's destruction and the closing of seaports.
Physicians dressed in long black robes, wide-brimmed hats, and masks with a beak that were common in this era.
The explanation behind this is that the masks were thought to include a mixture of herbs, spices, and essential oils, which the doctors would inhale.
Their long black robes were also reported to be doused in a similar scented mixture, and modern research supports this hypothesis. They had made an essential oil recipe that protected them from infection by applying it to their hands, ears, temples, feet, and mouth masks.
The judge followed through on his promise. Instead of being burned alive, the men were hanged for their crimes.
This particular combination was employed by medics who treated the victims of the Black Death from then on. Doctors have had the moniker "quack" for a long time because of their beak.
